Your Frequently Asked Questions
We know many families coming to Barefoot Wakes have never wakesurfed before, maybe your crew hasn’t even been boating - and that’s exactly who this experience is designed for. Our goal is simple: create a fun, relaxed day on the water where your family can laugh, try something new, and make great memories together.
Here are a few things to know before your lake day.

Do we need water sports experience?
Not at all!
In fact, most of our families are trying it for the first time. Our volunteer surf coaches will guide you step-by-step. If you can hold onto a rope and smile, you’re already qualified.
Some people surf all afternoon.
Some people try once and declare victory.
Some people become professional snack eaters on the boat.
All options are fully supported.
We do just need to know if all of your family members can swim and all kids younger than 13 must wear lifejackets at all times on the dock and the boat per Oklahoma State law.
What should we bring?
Keep it simple.
We recommend bringing:
• Swimsuits
• Sunglasses / hat
• Comfortable DRY clothes for after surfing
• Any necessary medications including Dramamine, allergy meds & pain relievers
• A great attitude and sense of adventure!
Barefoot Wakes provides:
• Towels
• Sunscreen
• Life jackets in EVERY size
• Surf boards and equipment
• Boat snacks and drinks
• Music and good vibes
• Photos and videos of the day

Do we need to bring a cooler?
We’ve got you covered!
Before your trip, we’ll send over a comprehensive “Pack the Cooler” form so you can tell us about your family’s favorite snacks and drinks.
Space on the boat (and in the cooler) is limited, but
packing boat snacks is something we take very seriously - some might even say it’s an art form.
Our crew will stock the cooler with things your family will actually enjoy, so when it’s time for a snack you can dig in like you packed it yourself.
One important note: Barefoot Wakes is an alcohol-free experience, so all drinks on the boat are family-friendly.
After our surf session, we’ll also stop for a meal together to refuel and relax after a great day on the water.
If your family has food allergies, sensitivities, or picky eaters, no worries at all. Our own crew deal with dietary restrictions every day, so we’re used to planning meals that work for everyone.
Bottom line: no one leaves hungry — surfers, spectators, or professional snackers.
What if someone in our family doesn't want to surf?
Totally fine!

Some people prefer to relax, enjoy the ride, and cheer everyone else on. The experience is just as fun from the boat.

Our goal isn’t to turn everyone into a surfer. It’s to give your family a great day together.

Is it safe for kids?
Yes.
Safety is a top priority for us.
All children will be fitted with proper life jackets, and our volunteers are experienced in coaching riders of all ages and comfort levels. Kids 8 years and older are typically more successful surfing on their own and younger kids can try to surf tandem with one of our coaches. We ask for weight information for children under 13 so we can ensure the correct safety gear is ready.
As a reminder, all kids younger than 13 must always wear lifejackets on the dock and the boat per Oklahoma state law.
How long will the experience last?
Plan for approximately 3-4 hours on the water.

We usually spend 30–45 minutes at the dock getting everyone checked in, fitted with life jackets, covering the basics of wakesurfing and introducing you to the boat crew before we head out on the lake.
Once we’re on the water, there’s plenty of time for everyone to surf, relax, snack, laugh, and enjoy the lake without feeling rushed.
After our wakesurf session, we’ll head back to shore and invite your family to join us for a meal at one of our lake partner restaurants to wrap up the day together.
Quick boat reality check: wakesurf boats don’t have restrooms onboard and four hours is a long time on the water. We can always stop at a marina if needed, but most lake regulars know that the lake itself tends to work just fine, just pretend you’re a fish! If you’re new to lake life, don’t worry - we’ll make sure everyone is comfortable.

What if someone falls while surfing?
Great news … falling is a major part of the sport!
In fact, most people fall many times before they get the hang of it. Even experienced riders have some epic wipeouts. The good news is that wakesurfing happens at slower speeds behind the boat, (around 9 - 11 mph) and the water is extremely forgiving.
This low impact watersport is a great way for water addicts of all ages to get out behind the boat.
Our coaches will guide each rider step-by-step and stay close to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe while everyone in the water wears a USCG compliant life jacket.
And around here, wipeouts aren’t embarrassing, they’re usually the highlight of the photo reel.
Every attempt gets a cheer from the boat. Getting up for the first time just means the cheering gets even louder.
Is there an age, height, or weight limit for surfing?
Barefoot Wakes surf lessons are designed to be family friendly, and we do our best to help anyone who wants to give surfing a try. Trust us, if you have the will, we’ll find the way.
One thing we’ve learned over the years: the best students aren’t always the most athletic - they’re the best listeners. Wakesurfing is one of those rare sports that almost anyone can enjoy with the right coaching and encouragement. Our catch phrase for new riders is “Do Less!”
We carry gear for all shapes, sizes, and abilities, and our coaches are experienced at helping first-time riders feel comfortable on the surfboard. Unlike other tow watersports, wakesurf boats travel at slower speeds and riders stay close to the boat, which makes learning much easier. Most riders don’t take dramatic falls, they just fade back into the water and laugh about it.
A good rule of thumb: if you can squat down and stand back up, you can probably learn to surf.
Kids are absolutely encouraged to participate! Riders ages 8 and up can usually surf on their own, while younger riders often enjoy tandem surfing with one of our coaches for extra safety and confidence.
Our coaches work with riders of all comfort levels and will help each person decide if they want to surf, try a few times, or simply enjoy the view from the boat.
There’s no pressure to wakesurf. Some people discover a hidden talent, while others discover they are excellent snack coordinators and cheerleaders. Both roles are highly valued on the Barefoot Wakes boat.

Will photos be taken?
Yes!

Our volunteers capture photos and videos throughout the day so your family can relive the experience. Expect action shots, big smiles, and possibly a legendary wipeout or two.
The memories are all yours to keep. Don’t worry, we won’t use any photos of your family without your permission but, if you’re willing, we do love to share great moments on our social media and website.
P.S. Make sure to follow us on facebook and Instagram!
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first. If weather conditions aren’t ideal, we may reschedule your experience so your family can still enjoy a great day on the water.

What does this experience cost our family?
It’s completely free for military families!
Thanks to our generous sponsors, your family can enjoy a full day on the water without worrying about any expenses. All we ask is that you show up ready to have fun.
Extra Note: We’ve found that most families are comfortable getting to Grand Lake on their own. Let us know at booking if you need help with travel or accommodation at the lake overnight and we can set that up for you as well!
How many people can ride in the boat at once?
Each boat has a set capacity to keep things safe and comfortable. Our team will let you know in advance how many family members can be on board and help coordinate rotations for surfing and relaxing.
For newcomers to wakesurfing, it typically takes about one hour per person to gain competency for new surfers. That doesn’t necessarily mean one person surfs for a full hour straight - it’s spread out across several short rides and practice attempts. While one family member is learning, others can cheer, relax, enjoy snacks, or take notes for their own surf session. This ensures everyone gets a turn and learns at their own pace without feeling rushed.

What if someone gets seasick or anxious about the water?
Most people adjust quickly, but if anyone feels uneasy, they can stay on the boat and enjoy the view. Everyone is welcome to experience the lake at their own pace.
If you know motion sickness can be an issue, please bring any anti-nausea medication you usually take. Our crew will do everything we can to keep everyone comfortable, from adjusting where you sit to helping with breaks.
Remember: this day is about fun and relaxation, not stress. Watching the action from the boat counts as a win too!
Can families bring pets or service animals?
Unfortunately, pets cannot come on the boat. The limited space on the boat, combined with restricted access to restroom facilities, makes it challenging to safely accommodate animals while ensuring a comfortable environment for all families and volunteers. We understand this may be disappointing, and we truly appreciate your understanding.
For service animals related to a disability, please contact us in advance so we can work with you to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone on board. With prior approval, accommodation may be made. We are happy to work with you to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, and we may be able to explore alternative ways to support your participation without a service animal onboard.
Our priority is a fun, safe, and inclusive experience for everyone, and we’re happy to discuss any needs your family may have before your day on the water.
